I'm inclined to agree that the river across the Mall or down Castle St is a bit of a myth. There may have been a small stream that used to flow into the main Castlebar Rivers that was culverted at some stage. Look at the lie of the land above from the lake down towards Turlough. Without major earth movements the river has to flow the way it does - along the darker green (lower) spots on the map. Water flows downhill.
