Bonfire memories in Castlebar

Posted by C/bar native on July 13, 2005 at 14:41:30:

Reading about bonfires in Castlebar (and McHale Road's was by far the biggest), does anyone remember other ones in the past?
Remember the bonfires that took plce in The Lawn and you had to go through the late Jackie Elliot's field where Dr. Tobin's Surgeries,Station Road is now, to get to it.
The Mercy Sisters,to their credit never minded & indeed the odd one would come along with the late Ethel Staunton, Spencer St., or Mrs. Durcan,Rock Square.Alot of residents of Spencer Street & Station Road would go to these bonfires.
Also, residents of Castle St.,/Main St.,/Ellison Street and other principal streets would have their bonfires in a field not too far where the Celtic Clubhouse is now - in Aglish Estate. I can well remember going with my parents through all these fields and it becoming dark in the evening and we would be slightly frighened and thinking that we walked for miles.
Great times though.....any other memories out there?
