river query

Posted by bob on November 29, 2006 at 20:47:35:

Has anyone any information as to when and why the two weirs, one at the rear of the college, at the bridge downstream of where the town river exits the lake, and another similar structure in the stream that leaves Saleen lake flowing to Lough Lannagh (About two miles out the rail track on the left hand side from the station towards Westport). Obvioulsy both structures regulate flow between the two lakes but does anyone know when they were built and if there was any particular event that lead to their construction. One would think that they may have been there in a previous form before the existing concret structures. Any clues anyone??
