The house named Soho, shown on Taylor and Skinner’s map, would have been a residence the property of the Reverend Dr. Ellison of Castlebar, who figured in the defence of Killala, when the French forces arrived there in August 1798, and was injured in the heel by a French musket ball. He had other property at Rocklands. He was the Rector at Christ Church and Ellison Street is named after him.
It seems the word ‘Soho’ was an old hunting cry, ’Tally-Ho, being another example, and it had nothing to do with houses of ill repute.
