And to think that in the 60's. we were chased off The Mall for playing football because it was not allowed. Such nonsense when you think of it.
I remember when a street race by the Go Karting club, circled The Mall, down Ellison Street, Castle Street and back to The Mall, and the nights before the race, Paddy Mellett practising, driving his go kart around the paths of The Mall.
And what about the carnivals with farmers night when a bull would be raffled, and the final night when a car was on offer. The Perk family from Youghal were the hosts, brother and sister John L and Stella, along with their mother and father.
And of course the St. Patrick's Day parade always culminated at The Mall, and in the early sixties, the Corpus Christi procession ended there with a big altar beautifully decorated by the nuns in the nearby convent.
But without doubt, it was football for every youngster on The Mall. It was a garden for all the town, but especially for those who had the name of Carney, Lavelle, Lyons, Munnelly, Rodgers, Horkan, Kelly, Murphy, Reynolds, Mc Loughlin, O'Malley, Murtagh, Hynes, Carty, Heverin, Parsons, Fahy.....and the list goes on.....
