a cara.....the stores the streets....and city hall here in toronto are all geared up for christmas ...on sunday the famed toronto santa claus parade is taking place ....incidentally next to macys parade in new york the oldest santa claus parade in north america....but that hoopla could never match the excitement we had in castlebar in the '40s ...'50s ...we were simple folk....gussie wynnes ....rj wynnes ....hanleys....phil hobans stores would have their stores filled with toys.....dessie dunne ....dessy clarke et al would be out with the waits.....we'd all cycle out looking for holly ...my favourite place was browns in rehins.....the poultry dept in the factory was a cackle of bird noises.....mary cannon....now mrs jennings ...my dear friend martha ruannne....biney gannon....and othes were knee high in feathers....peter devers ....christy hobans ....were full of sultanas ....raisins ....dried peel.....cherries....and all the ingredients for the best christmas cakes in the world.....the smell of cakes....and christmas puddings.... baking in the homes of mchale road were a tease for the youngsters....we'd often go down the back road to see if any cakes were cooling off outside on the window sills.....we as kids didnt have much but by god we had more than they have to day.....we had mental creativity.....we looked forward to the big day....the excitement of santa.....maybe a hornby train set or a cap gun...and what about st.stephens day and the wran......singing in the county hospital...and the county home .....the nurses always treated us with so much love and respect.....and generosity....the imperial was a great spot for me....when the pellys owned it.....god bless georgie whittaker ....his mantra was give me a penny and i'll pray for you.....georgie later joined the irish army......and was posted in renmore with another old boy hood friend brian wilson....who had a brother norman....i remember when i joined the free clothing association...{f.c.a.}....i remember georgie giving me an extra portion of bread when i did a course at renmore....tommy whittaker [perty] was in my class in school....and he and i did many of a crazy thing.....tommys uncle tom brinklow who lived in whittakers...had a weasel.....for rabbit hunting....tommy and i let the weasel out one time....and then we got scared uit was going to suck our blood....what a wonderful family the whittakers....willy ther father worked in the council offices....and i remember always admiring the big claddagh ring he wore so proudly....the fair family lived next door and i have many wonderful stories of that great family.....about now when we were in national school in the '40s....we would have to write a composition on marigid mor......of for one more evening on the road...and bon for the light....the bbc story is hot on the heels of this tid bit....off the beaten track....but that was castlebar once upon a good time....when dr bresnihan was the county surgeon ....and paddy kelly was the greatest act in town....
