Many of the cut-stone blocks from the jail were removed by Alec Neely and stacked on the right hand side of the Gallows Hill road where it meets Chapel St. The blocks eventually became a problem when Gallows Hill had to be widened. Mayo Co. Council then removed the beautiful limestone blocks, fed them into a crusher and used them for road building. Not the first time, I suppose, (and probably not the last either) that we showed scant regard for items of historical interest.
