looking at old listings

Posted by SteamBuff on March 24, 2009 at 23:02:59:

looking at some old listing, a question was where did St Joseph's Terrace start was raised.
The area known as St Joseph's Terrace started at the garage that Jim Barrett build, became Smiths and is now Tommy Robinsons. It extented up to the next plot after the 2 houses of Devers and Dwains, one storey houses.
It was so named as Jim(James J.) Barrett purchased the land from the Sisters of Mercy. The area was full of trees which he cut down and sold. This allow him to build the two one storey houses (Devers, Kathy Morans etc)which he sold on and build the garage and the 4 houses next to it.
My understanding is that it was so named by agreement with Jim Barrett and the Nuns.
Spencer Street was number 1-20 from Dolans to Tossie Kellys which was freehold to the Earl of Lucan. Mrs Heany who was his agent may have lived in Jackie Elliott's house, however she did use their front room as an office/collection point. The rest of Spencer Street was not numbered and did not have a post code.
Some of those old listing are riveting reading as they provide a great inside into the history of Castlebar.
Are there any books available which one could purchase and read the history. Some of us live outside the island of Ireland and cannot alway get local history issues.
