I too went to St.PaT,s and St Ger,s and got the cane and the strap, also got the hairs pulled out and FLAYED by 'the Flea'and his favourite comment that would follow as he threw the brutally extracted hair on the desk before you was 'put that with the bacon and cabbage'.Yes there were some sadistic lay teachers and brothers, one old spinster at St.Pats in the sixties particularly springs to mind and I think she went 'craw thumping' every morning, then come to school and rip the hair out of childrens heads or grasp them by the cheek or lip and pull for all she was worth.
I was from outside the town limits and was generally referred to as a 'country mug' by some teachers and other pupils and I do agree that beatings were inversely proportinate depending on the social standing of the pupil's family. Those at the higher end Zero and the ones at the lower No limit.
Let us not forget though that the 'regime'was known of and tolerated by those of higher standing from Leinster House down to the parents of our fellow pupils (of higher?? standing) and I wonder has any of those pupils complained or made an issue of what happened to their fellow schoolmates of years ago? I don't! think so.
Let us also never forget in the light of what's going on the many (Majority) of fine teachers that did try and give us a good foundation and education in school .tech. and college.
They are the ones I try and renmember because the others are not worth wasting a minute of thought in our precious lives but we can do what we couldn't at the time ie. laugh about them.
Some comments were about homework, yes we got homework and we had to do it or we got the strap or cane but homework in our house was your own responsibility and had to be fitted in after all the evenings work was completed on the farm.
Lest anyone thinks that I condone what went on ,I can categorically say .No.
It was however the times we lived in and the actions or inactions of the oppressive governments and their departments that ruled us that are at fault, as are the more local departments and institutions.
I am not a teacher and didn't go past third year at St.Gers. because I had to go and make my own way in life and have lived in England for the past thirty five years and all I can say to those that are still affected by what went on, is ,move on and dont let those sadists control or rule your life anymore because that is the ultimate retribution, they were only powerful enough to beat up on kids they would be afraid of their lives now of the men and women you have become.
