I don't remember Mr Garavan, RIP. My sympathy to his family and friends. But I do recall the buzz around town when Garavans made the transition from grocery shop with assistants in white coats serving from behind counters to supermarket. That must have been the early to mid-'60s. Wasn't it Castlebar's first supermarket, followed soon after by Hoban's on Main Street? Or, was Hobans the first? Even saying the word 'supermarket' was a new thrill. I wont forget the strangeness of meandering the aisles with a shopping basket, being allowed to serve yourself from the shelves! It's something this generation takes for granted.
