Following the Truce he took the Republican side and during this period, he was interned in Athlone with his sons Sam and Pat. Pat was later transferred to Kilmainham, the fourth generation of the family to be interned there in the cause of Irish freedom. During the Emergency, he served with the FCA and was a former member and Chairman of the Urban Council. A member of the original Castlebar Mitchels GAA Club, he played hurling for Mayo and was also a founder member of C/bar Coursing Club and Salmon Anglers’ Association. A powerful swimmer, he featured in three successful rescues at the diving board at Lough Lannagh and in his later years, he rarely spoke of the past as he had sworn an oath of allegiance to the IRB. He left a large family; four sons and three daughters and would have a very large extended family even now, left in the town.
