Hi Oliver,

You are confusing our shop with that of Christy Hoban. Our shop(Brian Hobans) was in Newtown St., across from the Presbytery. My dad worked in the Hat Factory and shop was started by my mother.

I also remember Christy Hoban's ( No relation however.) His son John was in my class in National school. Along with being one of the leading houses for bacon in the town, Christy's was also a wholesaler.

We would buy some items from him, but the bulk of our grocery supplies were bought from Gilmartins from Kiltimagh who were relatives of my mothers. Gilmartins were one of the leading wholesalers in Connaught at that time.

It is always so interesting to read your postings on noticeboard. Even though some of the recollections are a few years before my time , they bring up a lot of fond memories of old Castlebar.

Best wishes for a happy Christmas and the best in life and happiness in 2011.
Brian.
