a cara....in the late '40s early '50s the route i covered had a series of temporary postmen.....myself included.....my cousin con clarke from new line did it for quite awhile....as did another guy i know so well but his name is absent.......he also worked the exchange when it was in the old post office.i knew your dad very well and recall his dress smartness that you mentioned.....i remeber the big three wheel wicker carts used on town routes....they were used mainly for parcels....i remember patsy mclaughlin....joady scully and your dad pushing them along ellison street and spencer street....i was not issued an uniform....but i remember them vey well......i remember one day i came in from my route....it was a cold wet ...bleak day....i had my oil skin cape...but i was soaked.....when i got to the post office the assst. post master...i remember him too...he had a couple of bags of rinso or persil soap coupons which he said had to be delivered on my route.....he sent me out again.....i delivered the road....station road and out to the cross at milebush....i got to the aughadrina....and kilboyne.....when i was cycling through the bog....i dumped the soap coupons in the bog.... i often wondered if anyone cutting turf there the next year found about 2 "million" soap coupons......i wish i got a penny for the many times i got a flat tire on that route....but i rode the bike on the rims......i mentioned how one of my duties was to pick up the mail bags....from the late train that got into castlebar at about....1 a.m.
i was responsible for signing for the post bags....usually about 16...and maybe a couple of registered bags.....mick garry was the haulage contractor.......and many a night after a heavy night of drinking at byrnnes on main street mick never made it to the station.....i would have to go looking for him ...through the town...or out in baile na gcloc...and many a night i could not find him.......so i would have to leave the bags at the station....making mr.foy...or mr.bradley very pissed off....they did not want the responsibility of storing the post......in the morning when the gang arrived at the post office....i still can see their faces and expressions....when they found no post bags.....i would have to look again for mick so ...the post could be sorted and delivered....there was alot of craic......but i too eventually....headed for holyhead and the big smoke in willesden and harlesden... i was in england for about three months ...the dept. of post and telegraphs sent me a registered letter....and a cheque for one and sixpence they owed me ......how i remember the big green gates with tere half door...which i had a key for.....they were fun days.....i remember one time meeting lizzy cahill by the mall....she always tied up her donkey and cart there.....she wanted to buy me a half one......any time she got a letter with no dollars....she would not listen as i read it....throw it in the fire she shout....yanks.....they're as tight as a bulls ass going up a hill ....she'd exclaim.....one day i remember getting drunk ...in john jennings pub... barry jennings my old friend set them up .... myself... willy keane.....pat devanney...got hammered.....when i left....i jumped into michael dolans pick up ...thinking it was garry's.....when mick climbed in and saw me....he in his unique lisp.....g...het....out mi...truck....you....baa...s...tard.......i missed the post pick up myself that night.....
the last time i saw your dad was in the imperial hotel.....we were both having some craic with mary jennings.......i read somewhere success comes to those who mind their own business.....they have very little competition.....
michel thank you for your comments....your dad was mighty......
............tog go bog e.....
