CASTLEBAR HISTORIC TRAIL

Posted by Brian Hoban on July 16, 2011 at 12:21:08:

I would like to welcome comments by Deirdre Cunningham, Mayo Heritage Officer in response to a query by Cllr.Harry Barrett at recent Town Council meeting.

Cultural and heritage tourism is one of the growth areas in the tourism sector. Much of our rich heritage has been lost or is in the process of being lost. It is time all persons and agencies interested in promoting the town should come to preserve and develop this resource before it is too late.

This is not just a Town Council or Castlebar Chamber matter. It is up to everybody with a love for and an interest in the town's future to come together in the interest of the sustainable development of our wonderful town. Neither should this become become a "political football". Our culture and heritage is something that we all have a responsibility to protect and develop in a sensitive manner.

I have noticed in recent that both Ballina and Killala have made some progress in this area in providing signage showing heritage sites in their respective towns. Perhaps for a start we could follow suit.

I am willing in co-operation with other interested parties to play my part( as I have always done.) in promoting "THE TOWN I LOVE SO WELL".
