I produced a version of Big Maggie in the Town Hall in the early Eighties. It was amateur drama at ti's best - great fun, total committment by the cast and well supported by the town. Eileen Grier had the title role, Harry Canning was one of the sons. Frank Armstrong was another. For the graveyard scene, we would change the names on the tombstones each night, writing names of well known local people and characters, The same group did a production of the Daughter from over the Water, where Ann Garavan and I played a husband and wife. We also did Home is the Hero, with Harry in the title role, When Fr Des Fahey and I started the Panto again, we had £12 in the bank a/c, We put this with £40 that Fr Des had from the Tops of the Town and by the time Dick Whittington opened, we had debts of £1500! Nan Monaghan used to warn us that we'd all end up in Sligo jail. June 2012 marks the 10th anniversary of the passing of John B Keane. Maybe some enterprising thespians in town might consider marking the event. We hope to have a number of tributes during Writers' Week if anybody is visiting.
