My understanding is that the Military Barracks never had a name until a few years ago when the military authorities gave it the name Mitchel. Many years ago an army man named Regan from Westport telephoned me and asked me to suggest a few names for the barracks. I cannot think of his Christian name or rank but I do remember his father was a member of the Garda Siochana in Westport who had a son who played in goal for Westport United.
