It is almost certain that the local G.A.A. Club Mitchels and the Barracks took their names from John Mitchel the Young Irelander who was banished to Tasmania in 1848 after being found guilty of treason.

During question time in the Dail on the 21 October 2008, the then Minister for Defence Willie O’Dea referred to the barracks as “Mitchel Barracks”.
