Brendan was a regular visitor to the County Library and was delighted when I told him that his father was the first patient to have an operation in the then newly built Operating Theatre of the Mayo County Infirmary in May 1910. He had his appendix removed by Dr. Anthony MacBride. This was significant because before the new theatre was built, patients were operated on in the general Wards next to each other on a table, surrounded by a screen.
Both Brendan and his father have left a treasure trove of information which local historians will be examining for years to come. May he rest in peace.
