Hi Mrsk. The steps at the Boxing Club and indeed the path which criss-crosses the Mall were constructed by the Earl of Lucan in 1898 for the comfort of the townspeople crossing to the Post Office (home of Margaret Burke Sheridan). Presumely they replaced a rudimentary mud/dirt path.
