A Cara. ..the market and fairs were as much a part of my life as their legacy is to remember those days of once upon a good time.....the farmers and country folk brought their goods to town....for them it was a time to get cash ...supplies and catch up on goings on.....but the street traders brought colour ...flare..and excitement to the day....the prime spot to set up a stall was outside paddy morals. ..all the way down to the corner of rush street and linen hall street ...and from Stephen garivans o tom touhys. ....but paddy morals side was primo...second clothes ...hardware ...delph.....were the main stalls......we had a language of our own..everything had its own language....and the chapejacks and pavees had their own style...on the bridge outside condons the fish and dillisk men set up their tables complete with white table cloth and scales...the dillisk and corrageen moss sat in a big pile in deliberate tempt...often as boys we would try and scoop a little dillisk off the tables...Tom moloney manned that pitch for as long as remember....and big tom Connolly manned the fish table..herrings ..mackerel were the big sellers...whiting and cod available....and hh the cockles ...mussels....clans. ...can you remember kniuckling 2 cockles together ..and had suckling out that succulent delicious membrane....yummy...the dillisk ...unique in its salty flavor and it's rich iodine....jimmy dunnion. ..cyril Chapman ...had locks to keep the cat in and the neighbour out....each with his own carnivalesque salesman showman style....they had chain that houdini couldn't escape from...there was tony Doherty ...selling delph and China. ..banging his delph on tea chests...and pitching plates in the air like a juggler...then the second hand clothes dealers...CharlieCorcoran who sold swag for a lifetime...and who was also a JP ...his brother alex....the freynes from swinford...old George freyne and Dominic. ..they had jackets that were all wool bar the buttons....my father....and later on myself..the banter was 3 ring circus...as the farmers and others bought their police trousers...the magic continued until late in the evening....but the magic was in being part of the show....the pubs morans. ..garivans..touhys. ..Tommy Cullen. ..in my time I hawker clothes from drumkieran. .to gort. ...from achil to connemara...and the atmosphere was always the same....whether it was a good gaffe or bad gaffe..we became a part of folklore...we featured at every fair and market...we even had our own travelling doctor who was as black as night ...but captured the minds of all with his indian snake oil...guaranteed to clear up everything from arthritis to impotence. ..as he oracle in his journeys down the amazon....
that was the neon of markets and fairs in once upon a good time...tog go bog e...
