Flight Lt Bill Urqhart Dykes

Posted by PJ on January 04, 2017 at 05:34:57:

Currently reading a book about the transatlantic flight of Alcock and Brown and in it is a report that their arrival in Clifden (adjacent to the Marconi station in Derryglinnagh bog) was observed from the air and then telegraphed to the ministry in London by Flight Lt Bill Urqhart Dykes flying out of Castlebar RAF aerodrome.

When I went looking on here I came across this delightful discussion, dating back to 2012 about Lt Urquhart Dykes associations with Castlebar and the West of Ireland, including the account of him dropping a letter/message from his plane onto the lawn of The Freestones house (The Yews) on Westport rd in 1918.

Maybe the town needs a Urqhart Dykes road as much as a Sir Ernest Chain Rd to remember the association!!!!
