Pongo was the same as Bingo. In days gone by, bingo was not played in any of the local halls as is the case today. Instead Pongo was one of the big attractions at carnivals e.g. in the Military Barracks. There were no paper sheets of numbers as they have now - the numbers were painted on wooden sheets. When numbers were called you didn't mark the sheet (as that would destroy the painted numbers) you covered the called numbers with the caps of mineral (or porter!!) bottles. Ah! those were the days my friend!!
