In the years prior to the act of vandalism carried out by the owners, it was obvious to the dogs in the street that the same developers were deliberately allowing the building to deteriorate. It suited their purposes very well to fail to secure the building effectively against intrusions by the local gougers. It is a shame that collectively the councillors failed to take a serious stand and show leadership during the period of neglect by the owners. They are the locally elected representatives that presided while one of the oldest buildings ( and a listed one ) was razed. In my view the convent may well be standing today if the councillors were effective.
