Had some great summer times in that old Red Cabin and at Old Head Pier .Going to sleep and waking up to the sound of the surf out side the window;putting on the togs for a swim before breakfast, fishing late at night off the Pier with the old red and silver spinner plus lead weight. When there was a spate of fish it could get very crowded(the fishing pole was still in use by some of the locals)and extraction of hooks from rear ends was not unknown. Trying to spear flat fish at low tide. Pulling
Lobster pots from a Currach and setting nets with Spideal Fishermen who stayed in an old house on the Hotel farm and spent the summer trying to earn a bob fishing off those dangerous cliffs (no Honda engine for them but backbreaking rowing to keep off the rocks).Going on the bike to Lecanvey to keep a date with my then girlfriend who was staying there.( Lecanvey was the then Costa Del Sol for many Castlebar family holidays)
Not so many people went to Old Head.As Murrisk noted Thursday evening attracted those who had a car or who could get a lift. The Flannelly Bros ,David and Patrick came with their father every evening there was a good bit of high water. I think your swimmer was Walsh from Westport.
When I visit Old Head now its usually in the evenings when most of the cars and crowds are gone;thats when its at its best and it reminds me of summer times past in the old red cabin. Was it allways hot and sunny in 195? in Old Head? Do you remember Butch.
