Thursday afternoons. Half day closing of the the shops. In summer everyone who could went back to the sea - Old Head or Lecanvey. Old Head was always more sheltered and Pierce Carney liked to sit at the door of the red hut and read his paper in the sun. The hut is long gone and a boat launch occupied the site when I was last there. If you came from a family without a car you had to cadge a lift. Christy Hoban took lots of children in his van. Coming home he would switch off the engine and freewheel down Sheeaun. A local lad always came to the pier at Old Head on summer days for a swim at full tide. He always seemed to come in the afternoons. He liked to run and jump into the sea of the end of the pier. He had a prominent birthmark on one of his legs and always sounded a loud 'whoosh' when he jumped. Where are you now ?
