The Man from Snowy River is a famous Australian ballad written by Andrew Barton Paterson (known as "Banjo")in 1895.It describes in detail the Australian outback & bush & tells about the exploits of a now legendary character,Jack Riley.Jack Riley was born in 1834 at Castlebar & emigrated to Sydney in 1851.Research is been carried out at the moment as to where in C/bar & I'll keep the Board notified as to any progress. To alot of Australians,Jack Riley is up there with Ned Kelly & most school children in particularly South Australia would know off by heart "The Man from Snowy River".The poem has been an Australian favourite for a century & there had been a resurgence of interest since the release a few years ago of the movie of the same name. Jack Riley died on July 16th 1914 aged 80 years & buried at Cooyong.Tales about his adventures in the bush & his horsemanship became legandary & there have been numerous books & stories written about him. The author of the ballad, "Banjo" Paterson in 1895 was reputed at the time to have a wider audience than any other living writer in the English language except Kipling.
