Do anybody out there have any information on the Cemetery which was/is located to the rear of the County Home,Castlebar which is now the Sacred Heart Hospital?
I was looking through some old maps of Castlebar & noticed that the area for the cemetery was very large. It's located on the right hand side of the Hospital where the ambulannces are now kept & going back to where the new estates are built in Rathbawn.
There would have been a huge amount of graves going back to the time of the Famine when the Hospital was the Workhouse.I wonder were the graves interred or just forgotten about. It also raises the possibility that these new houses may be built over them.I also wonder was there ever any records kept of the deceased?
If anyone has any answers, please contribute.
