Lovely hurling, Butch! Of course you're right, its the Green. The Mall, all malls (and I could be absolutely wrong) are called after an old English game, pell-mell, in which those taking part threw an iron ball through a hoop. I am still researching Burleigh, as in Burleigh House. Of course there was also a place in Castlebar called Soho and a Wakefield House, which was north of the town, as well as a Bingham Terrace, a la Lord Lucan's family. There is a beautiful underground channel or canal, running under the Green from the Imperial Hotel side, or Dalys, if you prefer, to Ellison Street. It was discovered some years ago by council workmen and the workmanship is superb. I have been told the row of houses from Aras an Chondae to the Green Bay was originally the site of a school for the tenants of Lord Lucan. The Connaught Telegraph was at one time printed in a premises near the Green/Mall, once owned by McCormacks, the builders. Keep up the good work, Butch. You always have an angle on things. By the way, wasn't the top of Newport Road, towards Blackfort, called Burns' Byrnes Hill? What's the background to this? It's your neck of the woods, Butch.
