PUBLIC PROGRAMME December 2008/January 2009

Museum Shop & Café closed St. Stephen’s Day. Re-opens at 10.00am Friday 27 December.

Start the Christmas season in style with your family this year at the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life.
Supported by Mayo County Enterprise Board.


Yuletide treats including:

  • Christmas Food Fair - Traditional festive fare from a variety of food producers from around the region. Admission Free.
  • Christmas Exhibition in the Museum Galleries
  • Christmas Workshops - Fully Booked.
  • Santa Claus and his Magic Elves from 12.00-1.30 & 2.30-4.30pm. Cost €2.00 per child. Tickets available from the Museum from 11.00am on Sat. 13 December.
  • Christmas Carols - with Mayo Male Voice Choir & Gospel Singers
  • Face Painting
  • Free gift wrapping in the Museum Shop
  • Museum Café open.

Don't forget: when you leave the Museum visit the CRAFTMAKERS' CHRISTMAS FAIR in the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar, Co. Mayo. Saturday 13th December, from 10.00am-6.00pm. The Craftmakers' Christmas Fair brings together around 30 of the foremost exponents of a diverse selection of crafts from all over Ireland to present their distinctive wares for your delectation, delight and purchase. A range of top ceramics, woodcraft, leather work, jewellery, textiles, metalwork and more will be on show, with an opportunity to meet and buy direct from the makers themselves.

Cooking Workshop: Traditional Christmas Fare.

Join Jean Beattie to learn how to prepare goose stuffing and much more for a Traditional Christmas Meal.

Tues 16 December: 2.00pm – 3.00pm
Workshop: Mummer’s Masks.
Adults & Children Over 7.
The Mummers were a group of people who traditionally performed an intricate play with varied characters around Christmas time. Join Ted Kelly to make a Mummer’s Mask. Location. Education Room.


Fri 19 December: 2.30pm – 4.30pm
Performance. Carol Singing.
All Ages.
Enjoy traditional Christmas Carols with the Foxford National School Band. Location. Galleries.


Sun 21 December: 3.00pm – 4.30pm
Performance. “The Holly Bears a Berry”.
All Ages.
A concert celebrating the Winter Solstice and the coming of Christmas through traditional tunes and songs with musician Emer Mayock and guests.

 Sun 4 January: 2.30 pm – 3.30pm
Theatrical Performance. The Mummer’s Play.
All Ages
Watch the Sliigo ‘Sidhe Gaoithe’ Mummers bring to life such characters as St. Patrick, Brian Boru and many more in this traditional Mummer’s play.

Junior Event. Family Life in the Past.

Children Under 6 Accompanied by an Adult.
Join Lorna Elms of the Education & Outreach Department to explore family life in the past through role-play and art activities.

Drop in Event. The Knitting Circle.
Adults & Children Over 7
Exchange patterns, learn new techniques, bring along your knitting and join in.

Drop in Event. Rocks from Space – hold them in your hands!

Visit the temporary exhibition ‘Planet Earth Our Place in Space’. Get to hold meteorites and see them through a microscope with Matthew Parkes, the Museum’s Geologist. First come first served basis.


Fri 23 January 2.00pm – 4.30pm.
Talk. Images of the People. Everyday Life in Irish Art from the 19th Century to World War Two.
An exploration of the lives of people in the Irish countryside, looking at their dress, houses, furniture and tools as portrayed in paintings and drawings of the period, led by Dr John Molloy, GMIT.
Location. Education Room.


Sat 24 January 10.00am – 5.00pm
Day Course. Embroidery for Beginners.
Try this one day embroidery course given by Aileen Johnston and inspired by the Museums own embroidery collection.
