EDUCATION PROGRAMME

Wednesday 28 February: 2.30-3.30pm Talk and Display. Potato Varieties Past and Present. Join David Langford as he discusses the history of the potato from the Famine to the present day. Learn about types, blight and recipes from near and far. Location: Education Room

Sunday 4 March: 2.30-3.30pm Talk. Irish Women & Farming Join Mary Carroll, author of Women Drive Tractors Too, to hear about the changing role of Irish women in agriculture in the 20th century. Location: Education Room

Seachtain na Gaeilge 3ú - 17ú Márta 2007 Ceiliúrann Ard-Mhúsaem na hÉireann Seachtain na Gaeilge, le réimse imeachtaí trí Ghaeilge- turais, seisiúin scéalaíochta agus ceoil. Tá Bileoga Gníomhaíochta trí Ghaeilge ar fáil chomh maith. Beidh formhór na h-imeachtaí dátheangach. Beidh clár speisialta ar siúl i ngach brainse den Ard-Mhúsaem le linn Sheachtain na Gaeilge.

The National Museum of Ireland celebrates Seachtain na Gaeilge, with a range of events through Irish, including tours, storytelling and music. Irish language Activity Sheets are also available. Most events are bi-lingual.

Sunday 11 March: 2.30-3.30pm Workshop. Prepare for St. Patrick's Day! Join Tom Doyle of the Education & Outreach Department to make traditional St. Patrick's Day badges. CRAFT COURSES FOR ADULTS

TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS

Michael Davitt 1846-1906 an exhibition to commemorate the life of the father of the Land League.

This exhibition, which was organised by Mayo County Library and Mayo County Library, will run in the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life, Turlough Park, Castlebar until December '06. It is rich in images of Michael Davitt and his times and traces his life from birth in Mayo, to founder of the Land League, imprisonment, Member of Parliament and international activist. It is supplemented with artefacts drawn from the National Museum's collections associated with Davitt and the Land League. Runs until early March.

New exhibition opening 15 March '07 Hucklebuck Time - A Celebration Of The Generation That Danced Their Way Into History

In association with the TF Royal Hotel and Theatre, Castlebar . The exhibition, which will run in association with the TF Royal Hotel and Theatre, Castlebar features hundreds of contemporary photographs of the showband stars on stage and many pieces of memorabilia including a Royal Showband jacket from the 1960s and the saxophone used by the leader of the Royal Showband, Michael Coppinger, in the now famous 1965 recording of their smash hit 'The Hucklebuck'. This exhibition on social and music history is the work of Waterford Treasures Museum.

To coincide with this exhibition, the much heralded showband musical, Dancehall Q's and Hucklebuck Shoes, will give a special St Patrick's Day performance at the Royal Theatre, Castlebar on Saturday 17th March. Dancehall Q's and Hucklebuck Shows will endeavour to recreate the ultimate unique showband sound and will recapture the singing styles of those first Irish Superstars, the showband singers that topped the Irish charts almost on a weekly basis. The show promises to relive this incredible era in Irish entertainment taking a trip back in time and back down memory lane. Guided tours in Irish Available from Tuesday 6th to Friday 16th March at 2.00pm. Places are limited to 20. Tours in Irish will also be available throughout the week for groups. Pre-booking is essential.
