SCHOOLS COMPETITION - ESSAY WRITING
To celebrate National Heritage Week 2006 the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life is inviting upper primary students to write an essay on the theme of Changing Landscapes. The essay can discuss either or both the social and physical changes that have occurred in Ireland over the last 100 - 150 years.

Permanent Exhibition
The Natural Environment
Communities relied on the resources available in the immediate natural environment for self-sufficiency and survival. This exhibition looks at how the way of life in rural Ireland was influenced by the landscape and its resources. This is explored through vernacular architecture and illustrated by using different raw materials to make similar objects.

TEMPORARY EXHIBITION
Whitewash & Thatch - Temporary Exhibition
On display is the work of a group of student architects from the School of Architecture in University College, Dublin. In the 1940s they surveyed, sketched and painted in watercolour the thatched houses of a selection of villages around the country. Their work will be supplemented by drawings of houses from a previous decade in the work of Ake Campbell (1891-1957) and Albert Nilsson (Eskerod), 1904-1987) visiting Swedish scholars, who travelled in the south and west of Ireland in the 1930s. A centrepiece of the exhibition will be a series of four pastel drawings by the artist Seán Keating of Culloty's House, Kishkeam, in County Cork. It is the first time that this series is on exhibition.
Michael Davitt 1846-1906 an exhibition to commemorate the life of the father of the Land League.
The National Museum of Ireland - Country Life, Turlough Park, Castlebar is to open an exhibition on 12 October 2006 in this centenary year of the death of the founder of the Land League. This exhibition was organised by Mayo County Library and Mayo County Library. It is rich in images of Michael Davitt and his times and traces his life from birth in Mayo, to founder of the Land League, imprisonment, Member of Parliament and international activist. It is supplemented with artefacts drawn from the National Museum's collections associated with Davitt and the Land League.
The exhibition will continue for two months.
