Suck Valley League

Once again we had good success on the field over the weekend in the Suck Valley League. This past weekend we played away to Ballygar in round 5. Next weekend we are at home to Pearses of Galway. There is a change in the sequence of games with all the games being played on Sunday so why not come out and support. Details are at the end of the piece.

Under 16s

Castlebar Mitchels 2-7

Ballygar 1-10

Ballygar came back from the dead to draw this game in a tough and exciting game played in Ballygar on Saturday. Mitchels got off to a good start with Luke McGrath opening with a point and Liam Murphy whipping on a loose ball to goal. Ballygar showed their determination by fighting back and two points on the stroke of half-time sent them in with a one point interval lead. Mitchels and Ballygar exchanged scores early in the second half with Ballygar staying in front until Andrew Butler goaled with a bullet of a free to even up things. This was a key score and further points from Philip Redmond, Niall McCarney and Andrew Butler seemed to put Mitchels in the driving seat. Ballygar came back hard at them though and a goal with a couple of minutes to go left it all square. All the Mitchels lads played well with John Cotter leading them well from goals.

Team; J. Cotter, J. Lowe, L. Williams, M. O’Donnell, E. McCarney, C. Walsh, M. Gallagher, R. Kenny, S. Fitzgerald, N. McCarney, A. Butler, P. Redmond, D. McTigue, L. Murphy, L. McGrath, M. Clune, D. Mulvihill, S. Brizay.

Under 14s

Castlebar Mitchels 0-6

Ballygar 0-0

Conditions were very difficult in Ballygar on Sunday but that didn’t stop the Mitchels lads from winning a tough and dogged game. Mitchels were on top in the first half but found the scores hard to come by. Michael Clune eventually opened the scoring for them with a well taken point and Tony Sweeney added to it a few minutes later to leave them two points up at the break. Ballygar were proving difficult to break down but some good defence from Colm Morris and Richard O’Dea kept them at bay. Nathan O’Malley got a super point to open the second half and further points from Alan Gavin, Michael Clune and Nathan O’Malley again sealed the issue. Ballygar to their credit never gave up the game but they lacked some scoring power up front.

Team; B. Lane, C. Morris, K. Fehilly, B. Kennedy, C. Munnelly, R. O’Dea, P. Condon, T. Sweeney, M.Clune, N. O’Malley, A. Gavin, N. Walsh, G. Duffy, J. Corcoran, D. McHale, C. Gavin, F. Boland, S. King, J. Welby, L. Kenchington.

Under 12s

Castlebar Mitchels 5-3

Ballygar 1-1

The switching of Conor Mylett from midfield to full-forward seems to have worked wonders for Mitchels with the full-forward netting five goals in this one. This game was evenly contested in the opening half with the score half way through standing at 2-0 to 1-1. Two further late goals from Conor and a wonderful point from Aarron Singh left Mitchels with a three goal advantage at the break. In the second half Mitchels pressed home their advantage with two well taken points from Cathal Walsh and another goal from Conor Mylett while at the other end Thomas Quinn kept the defence solid all through. The move of the game was a fast ball from Cathal Walsh which was doubled on by Conor Mylett and doubled on again by Aarron Singh but sadly it just went inches wide.

Team; N. Fahey, D. Munnelly, T. Quinn-Bailie, D. Costello, A. Jensen, A. Towey, G. Robinson, C. Walsh, A. O’Sullivan, S. Prendergast, K. Keena, L. King, A. Singh, C. Mylett, D. Hayes, D. Singh.

Hurling History

Did you know that successive invaders the Vikings and Anglo-Normans that settled in Ireland are both believed to have been fascinated by the sport of hurling. So much so that it is believed to have spread to Scotland and England. The Kilkenny statutes of 1336 banned the English from Learning the Irish language, banned the playing of hurling and also forbade mixed Irish-English marriages. The ban had little or no effect on the popularity of hurling so 200 years later the statute of Galway of 1537, banned the playing of hurling or "hokie", but they allowed archery and football, this is around the first time that Gaelic football is first mentioned in historical text, making it a relatively new sport in comparison to Hurling. However this latest attempt to ban hurling didn't work either and by the 18th century hurling entered what is often called its 'golden age'.
