The Mitchels survived a very stern test of their character in this championship game in McHale Park on Sat night last. Forced to field without a significant number of players due to injury, nevertheless the first half performance is one that will be best forgotten. Apart from a five minute period early in the half, when they scored a 1-2, the Mitchels were completely at sea all over the pitch. The free roaming Ballaghadereen were creating chances but luckily they were unable to convert most of their possession into scores. The half time score of 1-2 to 0-7 did not truly reflect the difference in the teams. The second half however was to see the Mitchels reach something of their potential. Within a minute of the resumption, they had drawn level with two good points. The defence closed down the Ballaghadereen forwards and centre field began to dominate and supply the forwards with good first time ball. The forwards responded and scored 1-5 in this half, the goal coming from a penalty mid way through the half, while Ballaghadereen could only register 0-2. It was a relieved Mitchels team which left the field but one which surely will have learnt many valuable lessons. From now on all games are virtual knockout games and the focus has got to remain on putting opposition teams away by playing fast direct football.

Mitchels

Ciaran Naughton, Brian Hennelly, Richie Feeney, Paul Harte, Brian Malone, Declan Shaw (Capt), Tim Byrne, Eamon Shaughnessy, Shane Fitzmaurice, Ronan Burke, Rory O Grady, Jamie Fitzmaurice, Paul Jordan, Kevin Malone, Niall Lydon. Subs Diarmuid Byrne for Ronan Burke, David Gordon for Tim Byrne.

Congratulations

Double celebrations over the weekend as Mickey Feeney crossed the rubicon and joined the swelling ranks of those of a venerable age. He claims to be only 18 but with 22 years experience. Eamon Shaughnessy, though not quiet in the veterans league also celebrated a birthday. They say that midfielders really only come into their own when they reach 30 so great things expected from Eamonn. Congratulations to both.

Reminders
