The two structures were the old weighing scales that operated in an open building. The goods were put on a flat metal plate supported by chains on one side of the scales and weights were added to the other side to until a balance was achieved. When not in use the two plates were chained to the centre upright. The other building was for the old weigh bridge which was along side the building. Vehicles could drive on to the weigh bridge and the weight was registered inside the building. This building was normally locked. The space in the corner of the square was occupied by McCormacks Builders as their yard. Maybe JDP has some more info.
