Turns out that the river used to run from the Barrack Bridge/McCormack's Estate thruogh the Castle St. car park, through the (now) lowest part of Castle St., around the back of Ellison Et., through the (now) lowest part of Ellison St. and down Cavendish Lane to Dunnes. From here it continued on its present course to the lake. I just realised while typing that that the flow is in the opposite direction, but I can't be bothered re-typing all that in reverse....uuuuh! The course of the river was altered by the local COI clergyman who wanted to incorporate the larger part of the town into his diocese thus raising it's population and elevating him to Bishop or something or other.
