a cara.....back to spencer street.....the mall was surrounded with a heavy chain.....as kids we used to try and swing on it although it was rather low...also opposite the imperial hotel was the fabled "hanging tree"....this was a point of intrigue.....on saturdays lizzy cahill would ride into town from ballyheane and tie up her donkey opposite the bank of ireland ....this was a saturday ritual.....mr mahonney was the bank manager ....but sadly he died from a massive coronary at the golf links....his wife later was a medical officer at the bacon factory...when i worked there for a short period in my ...."lost weekend " she was a source of solace.....the co.council offices were acroos from there....billy mclaughlin was .....always visible as was mr daly snr.......around the corner and onto spencer street proper stood pa gavins.....a grocery store and bakery....the window was always filled with bacon joints....rashers......back...streaky...collar....green and smoked......piles of sausge links ....black and white puddings......the family cat was always in sight......next to pa gavins was paki philbins.......pub ...hackney...haulier.....lorrys of turf were always parked out front.....next to that was i think an insurance agency...ran by mr flynn....who lived on station road...his morris minor always black was always parked outside......next to that became the green olive.....owned by newspaper baron ...bernie reilly.....do i have stories of the green olive.....next was the arch with its big green gates.....under and into the arch lived the wards....john ward was a member of the siocholonie....jack his son was an electrician...plying his trade with the everards....jack later married the lady in the garden shop.....and later they moved to the us of a....paddy kings was next richard and i were class mates ...and i was friends also with sean and the girls.....byrnes was next.......then came redmonds....confectionary and restaurant ....the businesses were divided by an arch....i remember the time they covered the outside of the restaurant in terrazza....and had a big r enclosed in a circle as their motiff.....the rev. jackson lived next in the big house with wrought iron fence and railings....that later became burkes dentistry.....rattigans was next ....how we used to love to jump up and hit the big sandeman port sign that hung suspended over the door....la eile sceil eile.....anois ....tog go bog e......
