a cara..........in the '40s and '50s when sean smtyh was town clerk he had a couple of notices on the mall forbidding bicyle riding and playing ball .....the cycling rule was enforced....that i know .....sgt. glynn caught me riding on the mall one sunday evening in 1951 and he gave me a summons.....later i was fined a shilling.....i was served with a three page form ...outlining the grave offence and court disposition....i showed it to my class mates including sean heydon we had a great laugh about it.....the playing ball on the mall was approached more loosely.....myself ...the stewart brothers ....sean king....eddie moylett....snooky mcgrath.....barry jennings ....and others played ball many an evening on the mall without let or hindrance......many a carnival set up shop on the mall in the early '50s.....particularly mcmahons amusements......their bumper cars seemed to be better than tofts......it was in the mall ....guick laydon ....coined his expression...about a well known lady....i pissed up against beter in piccadily....ah....fond memories of the mall..... |
