Thanks, Royal for that fascinating piece on Mrs Dwyer, and mention of Spencer Park. As a child I remember the old house, and playing around the grounds. There's no trace of it left now, I think. Mrs Symms resided there for many years with her husband, a former bank manager in the town. After his death she moved eventually to a newly-built house opposite the tennis pavilion. At the time that site would would have been part of the grounds of Spencer Park. This was sometime in the early to mid-sixties, I'd guess. She was a kind and friendly woman who drove a red estate-type car and was accompanied always by a huge husky dog called Rollie. There was no road then linking Spencer street/Station road with Wesport road along the side of Duffy’s garage, so Spencer Park looked very imposing set well back from the road - in its own grounds, surrounded by mature trees. If it hasn't been covered already, what's the history of Spencer Park?
