In the Urban Council notes in the Connaught Telegraph of November 24, 1934, there is a discussion of the Market Square Pit and whether it should be eliminated. J Chambers (chairman) said the town was experiencing another outbreak of disease and could not be free of it while the pit remained in Market Square. T.H. Gillespie sais that even if the pit was removed the dump would remain there.
Was it a septic pit ?
Where was it on the square ?
What was the disease the town was experiencing ?
