I'm afraid I never heard of this pit in Market Square, but I do recall back in the early 50s hearing of cases of typhus in Mayo. I think the hospital in Swinford dealt with cases of that sort - wasn't it called the Fever Hospital? Did Dr Grace of Chapel St die of this disease? So its possible that councillor Chambers was referring to such a disease.
Neither did I know of a dump at this location. I do recall however that when the Moy Drainage Scheme was in full swing back in the 60s,the remains of a dump at the mouth of the river (as it exits Lough Lannagh)was unearthed - I remember huge amounts of old broken bottles in the spoil there. It finished "The Three Pillars" as a swimming "pool" as a huge amount of glass littered the river bed there once the excavation started.
