Well MM, I grew up at a time when there were plenty of "travellers". They camped in the bohereens and came visiting for food and milk and suchlike. I never remember an offer to work except for a small girl who tragically died one Xmas when a van in which she was a passenger was hit by a train at McAndrews crossing. I also remember the fair days and those with too much to drink (they weren't alone). And I well remember the language from all of these occassions - sometime rough, indeed very rough, but never a hint of a secret language. Late one night where a new house was being built I heard...."Martin what are ya doin'.... Are ya staylin?" If it was a secret language then we all understood it! Too much romanticism I fear.
