Sixty years ago in May 1944,Kiltimagh Town was the scene of one of the most appalling tragedies that occured in the County.Eight people died when the three story licensed premises of James Ruane in the Main Street, burned to the ground. It occured at around 4 o'clock in the early hours & despite the huge loss of lives, heroic efforts were attempted by a number of people.A child of two,Patrick Ruane (who went on to work with Mayo County Council) was saved from the fire when he was dropped by his Aunt, Margaret Byrne into the street from the top storey, where he was caught by a person below.Another man,Michael Stritch(30),a native of Fermoy,Co.Cork sacrificed his own life when after raising the alarm, heroically went back into the building to save others and died.
The reason I mention this tragedy, is that a number of people from Kiltimagh are planning to erect a plaque or something similar in Kiltimagh Cemetery shortly & to commemorate & pay tribute to the heroic deeds of the above & others.
