Seamas,

Irish or "Gaeilge" is still compulsory in schools if your Irish, I know now with the multicultural society that we live in kids from other countries who are now living in Ireland dont have to study Irish. Irish is required for entry into all third level courses (Uni's or Institutes of Technology), I dont think Irish is dying as a language either, their is now an Irish TV channel in existence for the last 5 years or so and getting more popular, Irish was always seen as old and outdated but now is being promoted as a young and "cool" language, with many celebrities in Ireland hosting their own TV shows and making young people aware of how useful it is if your with all your english or american cousins and they havent a clue what your talking about...An Tuigim? There are many Gaeltachts around Ireland, one in Achill, Co.Mayo and Connemara in Galway..Hope this info is of some use....
