Am I seeing things!!? It looks like my P.C. speaks Gaelig, cause I certainly did not put that fada on my 'O'!!. When I was growing up in Mayo Ned, there was a 'Gaeltacht'. I am going to take a chance and say it was ,Ballycroy or
Tubbercurry. Right or wrong Ned I am not able to tell you if Gaelig is spoken in a particular community(Gaeltacht) in County Mayo or the status of other Gaeltachts across Ireland. Threat of extinction?. Yes Ned that question poses a reality check. However the question has been laying around for years. As it is no longer compulsory in the schoool curriculum, might whittle away at it's life span. Yes Ned, it is a very expressive language of beauty. Brendan Behan yearned to write in that medium. There is another campaign to revitalise interest in keeeping it alive. More schools are available now for the sole purpose of teaching the 'Gaelga', and foriegn students aware of this ancient celtic tongue come to Ireland just to learn. I am sure your thread will spark interest, someone will expand on this very vital cultural issue, Slan ,Seamas.
