Now that the military barracks in Castlebar is nearly empty & not been used adequately by the Army & F.C.A.,it's interesting to note that in late 1952,the barracks was inspected & considered for use as a Garda Training Depot.It was part of the Governments decentralisation policy & the Commissioner of the Gardai,the Chief of Staff of the Army,along with department officials spent a day inspecting it.There had been a shortlist drawn up & Castlebar was one of the front runners.
However,the authorities decided not to & that was the end of it.
Maybe now as part of this Governments decentralisation policy,it may be considered for something else.....Garda Traing Depot?
