G.M.I.T. @ Castlebar Sports news.

GMIT@Castlebar Kayak club has had a very successful year in 2003, as it gets ready to face into yet another white water season hear in Mayo. There were a number of major events in which the club took part in over the last year.

In July the club sent a team of six students to Norway to take part in the 2003 Sjoa international white water festival. The expedition was an amazing achievement for such a small college as GMIT@Castlebar. The expedition has shown that a small college from Co. Mayo can travel to the most extreme places in Europe, while taking on the most challenging rivers Europe has on offer.

The expedition was very successful with team Portwest descending a number of the world’s finest rivers. The trip lasted over three weeks and in that time team Portwest ran some of Norway’s most remote and inhospitable rivers such as the Sjoa, Bøvra, Ula falls, ulva, Langon canyon, Leira and upper Jori to name a few. Each of which posed it’s own unique challenges to the team.

Each member of the team gained invaluable experience as a result of the expedition in there own unique way. The adventure started the moment the team departed Ireland. The expedition lasted over thee weeks. In that time over 3,000 km was travelled, each day running into the other like one long adventure as the sun shined for more then 20 hours a day.

GMIT kayak club in conjunction with Team Portwest is holding a multimedia presentation on the 2003 Norwegian expedition. The presentation will take place in GMIT@Castlebar on Friday the 21st of November at 8.00 pm. The show promises to be by it very nature, very exciting with all the members of the team will be present to answer any questions you may have on the expedition or to answer questions about travelling to Scandinavia. The presentation is open all members of the public, any one with an interest in kayaking or travelling in Scandinavia this is a must and are most welcome.

Challenges like The Norway expedition can only be under taken with the kind help and support of all the sponsors. Without the sponsors support such expeditions could not take place. GMIT kayak club are very grateful for all the support they have given to us thus far and look forward to continuing our relationship in the future.

Football was to the fore this week with women’s and men’s team seeing action on Wednesday. Contrasting conditions in Ballyheane where the women took on sligo I.T. in heavy rain and Dublin where the men Played Inchicore on a glorious sunny mild afternoon.

The men started slowly against the league leaders and found themselves quickly 5 points adrift. But great work from the half back line of Kevin Mitchell, Ronan Walsh and Alan Moran, (which was the springboard for most of the good football played), set up Dwayne Flynn who expertly lobbed the keeper to bring them back into it. Castlebar dominated then rest of the first half and another goal from Christy Keaney, as well as points from Dwayne, Seamus Tynan and Tom Byrne had them coasting and they were 5points ahead as the first half drew to a close.

The lads will be asking where the ref found 5 minutes of injury time but more importantly how they let their concentration slip to allow the Dublin men back in with a goal and a point before half time.

The same sluggishness effected Castlebar at the start of the second half and in the end they never recovered from this as the Dubliners opened up a lead that they held until the end. The second half was extremely physical and hard fought and although their quick hand passing and running game saw them dominate the game for long spells they didn’t convert enough to take the victory. Further points from Dwayne and Christy as well as a fine long-range effort from Nicky Corr had them right in it until a Dublin goal pushed them ahead. When Christy’s quick free deep in stoppage time was stopped as he went for goal it was all over and the Dublin had prevailed with a final score of 2-11 to 2-9.

The massive improvement from their first encounter will be something that Billy McNicholas will take a lot of consolation from, as well as the above mentioned Daithi Condon at full-back had an outstanding game and it appears that the side is shaping up perfectly for a late league run. With Gavin Kearey and Daniel O’Connor still to return things indeed look extremely healthy for the Trench Cup.

The women had a very tough assignment against I.T. Sligo and when the heavens opened it made it all the harder. With such conditions it was always going be hard to play football and so it proved, but what it did give was a very tight and tough game with both sets of players putting in great performances. Indeed there was only two points between the teams as they entered the closing stages. Two goals for the Sligo girls gave the scoreline a slant that the Castlebar girls probably did not deserve. They will however be buoyed by a very solid performance as they now face what will effectively be a Connaught decider with N.U.I.G. “B” team to see who will represent Connaught in the all-Ireland divisional play-offs.

The badminton club got up and running this week with a very enjoyable first session and then will continue training on Wednesdays @ 7.00 in St Mary’s Hall. New members are extremely welcome and lessons and advice will be given on the night.

Next week will be a busy one with the soccer team and basketball team travelling to Letterkenny while the women’s soccer face U.C.D. in the opening game of the challenge cup. This is an open draw competition and the Dublin girls play in a higher division but Casatlebar will be hoping to make life very difficult for them in a game that is scheduled for Wednesday @ 2.30 in St Mary’s.

Thursday will witness an Historic occasion as the Camogie team take to the field for the first time in an away fixture to Sligo I.T. the girls have been training extremely hard and have been looking forward to this game for quite a while, everyone wishes them well for this big game for them.
