Congratulations to Ms Lynch's 4th class who recently won the Discover Primary Science Award of Science and Maths Excellence for our school. It was a lengthy process and it involved many tasks to complete in science and maths. Various events were held in school as part of the entry process, such as the science show on Mini-beasts. 4th class also held a very successful science fair in the hall for the rest of the school. www.primaryscience.ie

Discover Primary Science 2011
4th Class Experiments

Ms Lynch's 4th class recently carried out some very interesting experiments as part of their entry for the Discovery Primary Science award.

In one experiment called "Keeping the damp out". We used sugar cubes, food colouring, plastic, kitchen roll & water to test which materials would make the best "damp course". We discovered that plastic was the best material to keep the water from rising up between the sugar cubes.
In another experiment, we tested various pieces of food for the presence of starch. To do this we had to use droppers and an iodine solution. If starch was present in the food, it turned a blue/black colour.

We really enjoyed carrying out these experiments.
Keep an eye on the school website for further updates on our quest to achieve this prestigious science award!
