Old timers in Castlebar will remember the large cut-stone blocks that were thrown on the right hand side of the road going up Gallows Hill. I believe these stones were once part of the old jail and were purchased by Alec Neely who lived in the first house on the left going up Gallows Hill (this house no longer exists). Sometime (in the early sixties, I'd say), when traffic up Gallows Hill was on the increase, the stones were regarded as an eyesore and possibly a traffic hazard and Mayo Co Council removed them, crushed them and used them for road making. I once heard that the stone came originally from a quarry in Baile na gCloch - not too far from their temporary resting place on Gallows Hill.
