spencer street in the seventies

Posted by castlebar native on February 02, 2007 at 14:55:37:

I am from castlebar and am home for a few weeks and my god what changes have occured. Main street seems to have moved to hopkins road and its like a little city. Gone are may leonards sweet shop were 10 pence went a long way. The picture house in spencer street gone, the pub scene seems to be dying. I remember Paddy King's pub where politics were discussed in fine detail before a council meeting. It was a pub where you felt at home with lots of children of all ages running in and out. The nook was a shop up further or else lyons where you brought your goods for the movies. My only regret is not to have kept more pictures. The mall is still the jewel in the town but I would love to see more seats and swings for mums to bring their childrena and sit and have a gossip. Where are the days of fun in the4 park instead of playstations and children not using imaginations
