Carney Family - Shop Keepers and Publicans

Posted by IALWTT on April 10, 2011 at 13:25:19:

Hello,

I'm looking for information about the Carney Family, Shop Keepers and Publicans on the 1901/11 Census.

1901 Census -
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Castlebar_Urban/Market_Street/1584423/

19 in Market Street (Castlebar Urban, Mayo)

1911 Census -
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Mayo/Castlebar_Urban/Gurteendrunagh__Market_Street
_/716705/

5 in Gurteendrunagh (Market Street) (Castlebar Urban, Mayo)

Where in modern day Castlebar are these addresses and what is there now? I would also be interested in any information about the family members.

My hobby is researching the Great War, with particular emphasis on Connaught Rangers, and Patrick Carney - 18 and a Grocers Assistant on the 1901 Census - joined the Connaught Rangers in Summer 1903, giving his address at that time as 14, Thomas Street, Castlebar. He was with the 2nd Battalion of the regiment during the retreat from Mons in August 1914 and was taken prisoner of war, along with more than 250 other Rangers, when they were ambushed at the small French town of Le Grand Fayt on August 26th, spending the rest of the War in various German PoW Camps.

Any information about Patrick's family greatly appreciated.

John
